Traditional IRA (Individual Retirement Account)

Traditional IRAs offer long-term savings with tax-deductible contributions, providing security and potential tax savings.

  • Can be opened and funded without any employer participation
  • Contributions and/or earnings are tax-deferred until retirement
  • Completely flexible as there is no minimum contribution in any year
  • While early withdrawals may be subject to a penalty, certain exceptions allow you to access funds without this penalty. These include but are not limited to:
    • First-time home purchase (up to $10,000)
    • Qualified higher education expenses
    • Certain unreimbursed medical expenses
    • Health insurance premiums during unemployment
    • Disability
    • Substantially equal periodic payments (SEPP)
    • Qualified birth or adoption expenses
  • For more information about a Traditional IRA, visit the IRS website

Roth IRA (Individual Retirement Account)

Roth IRA s provide tax-free growth and withdrawals for qualified need s—ideal for long-term, flexible family savings.

  • The money you contribute to a Roth IRA has already been taxed.
  • Roth IRAs enable the money you contribute to grow tax deferred. If you do not withdraw any of the earnings until you have had the IRA for at least 5 years and have a qualifying event, those earnings become tax-free.
  • There is no 70½ year age limit on making contributions. You do, however, need earned income (same definition as for Traditional IRAs). As long as you satisfy those requirements, you may contribute to a Roth IRA even after the year in which you reach 70½.
  • To be considered qualified, the withdrawal must meet both of the following:
    • The Roth IRA has been open for at least 5 years
    • The distribution is for one of these qualified reasons:
      • Age 59½ or older – Regular retirement withdrawals
      • First-time home purchase – Up to $10,000 lifetime limit (for the account holder or certain family members)
      • Disability – If the account holder becomes permanently disabled
      • Death – Distributions made to beneficiaries after the account holder’s passing
      • Qualified birth or adoption expenses – Up to $5,000 per child
      • Substantially equal periodic payments (SEPP) – Under IRS Rule 72(t)
      • Education expenses (only penalty-free, not tax-free) – Withdrawn before 59½ (earnings may be taxed, but penalty can be waived)
  • For more information about a Roth IRA, visit the
    IRS website.
